Myness, a schoolgirl from Malawi, was just 13 years old when she was forced into a marriage with a feckless alcoholic.
Now 15, Myness recalls the extreme poverty she and her grandmother faced, and thought that becoming a wife would be a better swap with her life of hardship.
“One day my friend came to me and asked why I was suffering. Life was very difficult at home. We could not even afford soap. My friend told me it would be better if I got married like her, so that my husband could take care of my needs.”
And so she did, marrying a much older man who was an alcoholic that squandered any money he earned – leaving his child bride hungry.
