15-year-old boy accidentally shoots friend in face while celebrating NFL Madden touchdown

A 15-year-old in New York has been charged with second-degree manslaughter after he allegedly accidentally shot his friend in the head while celebrating a victory in the NFL video game Madden on Thursday.

The boy, whose name has not been released by police, was smoking pot with friends Denzel Nash, 16, and Luigi Fontin, 18, when he scored a touchdown. Elated, he pulled out a .32 caliber pistol and waved it around in celebration.

It was at that point, an NY Daily News report says, the gun went off and Nash was shot in the face.

According to the New York Post, the boys are alleged to have then thrown the gun in a backpack, then into the bath, and fled.

However, cops responding to a 911 call found the two outside, and Fontini allegedly told police what had happened. Nash was rushed to Brookdale Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The backpack and gun, including five live rounds, were retrieved by police, and the alleged shooter was charged with second-degree manslaughter and criminal possession of a weapon.

Speaking to the NY Daily News, Tamika White, 23, who lives right across the hall from where Nash was shot, said, ‘This is an unfortunate situation. It could be one of my kids. I feel sad. My heart goes out to the parents… That could happen to anybody’s child.’

Angela Meloni, a teacher at Nash’s school has set up a GoFundMe page hoping to raise money to pay for his funeral expenses.

A note from her on the site reads: ‘I write this now as one of his many teachers who are heartbroken and sickened over this loss; Denzel was a junior at our high school, a former member of the soccer team, and a beloved friend to much of the student body.

‘In the aftermath of this tragedy, there are many unexpected expenses that his family is currently incurring. As his teachers, friends, family, or even well-meaning strangers, we want to come together to help give Denzel the proper farewell and burial that we all know he deserves.’
