A beloved New Jersey high school principal has died in hospital while donating bone marrow to help save a 14-year-old boy in France.

Dr Derrick Nelson, who was the principal at Westfield High School, died on Sunday night.

School officials announced the news of the 44-year-old’s death on Monday.

Details of his death were not released by the school but it is understood to have been related to complications he suffered with the bone marrow extraction.
