Georgia High School’s First School-Sanctioned Integrated Prom

Sixty years after the US Supreme Court’s ruling in Brown v. Board of Education, Wilcox High in Georgia held its first ever school-sanctioned integrated prom on March 29, 2014.

Although the school is not segregated, separate proms were held because the school district refused to officially sponsor a prom. Separate private events were held for students of each race until 2013.

Until now, the school has held two proms – one for white students and another for black students – each year.

“Hopefully when everything is said and done, people in our county will realize that there is no sense in the way things are right now,” African American student Mareshia Rucker told ABC News.
