ST. PETERSBURG – When Louise Hamilton became sick some 40 years back she knew that traditional western medicine was not for her. She knew that pumping chemicals into her body would do more harm than good, and the lethargy was something she could not live with.

Not one to be told there’s only one option, Hamilton began to delved into the world of holistic remedies, learning as much as she could. Once her friends started seeing a change in her, they wanted Hamilton to direct them to the best herbal mixtures for their aliments.

She began giving consultations in her living room and word of mouth spread like wildfire. So much so that she and her husband opened a shop on Fifth Avenue North near St. Pete High. This shop eventually housed a classroom for workshops, a massage therapist and a holistic physician.

“We later incorporated spices and vitamins and nutritional diets for people who wanted to get more into their health holistically,” said Hamilton.

One day Hamilton was invited to be a guest on a talk radio show and was allotted a 30-minute slot to talk about her shop. Well, that 30-minute window turned into three hours, and by the time she got back to her shop a line had formed outside waiting for her.

“My super energy herbal formula capsule was and is the hot item. This capsule does not have caffeine or sugar incorporated in it and it helps balance and build the body,” said Hamilton.

She is very educated in holistic health and has had the privilege to travel with a doctor and an anthropologist all over the United States learning and helping others learn that there is an alternative to synthetic drugs.

“One time I was on the plane with my four-week-old baby and two toddlers, and said to myself: ‘I can’t do this anymore,’ and when I got back home we started looking for a larger building,” she said as she explained how the store located at 4121 16th St. N. came into existence.

Great American Natural Products is stocked full of herbal supplements, essential oils, fragrance oils, teas, base oils and bath salts, soaps, pet care products just to name a few. Once you walk into this wonderland of healing, your senses are stimulated by aromatic spices and herbs. You’re then greeted with proper cup of herbal tea. This relaxing setting makes it easy to shop and even learn a thing or two about your body.

If it’s natural, you can find it at Great American. Hamilton always has in stock a wide variety of essential oils, raw shea butter, jojoba, argan and coconut oil, just to scratch the surface. We could list all of their products, but by the time you finish reading it you could have gotten in your car and taken a trip there.

If it’s clothing or jewelry you’re looking for, Great American has you covered there too.

“I was bored one day and made a small boutique area and we’ve been growing ever since,” Hamilton said as she explained that some of the handmade jewelry and stylish clothing are produced locally and that she has trouble keeping them stocked.

Great American Natural Products is a family affair. Hamilton’s husband, Ron, has a background in botanical research and has worked as an arborist. When he became a trained herbalist, they started producing their own line of supplements. Their two adult children also play major roles in the success of Great American Natural Products.

If Hamilton was not such a successful nutritionist and aromatherapist, she would most likely be a teacher. Her love of educating the masses about alternative medicine can be seen in her work with hospice. She teaches the proper usage of essential oils in aroma therapy. She has also helped to write the protocol that some hospices incorporate in their therapeutic environment to promote a calm and relaxing atmosphere.

Hamilton offers classes to individuals and groups in areas of aromatherapy, lip balm, room sprays, bath salts and body oils, lectures on spices, teas and herbs just to name a few. Many classes are free of charge. Information in these classes is made simple for easy retention.

Great American Natural Products will also assist you in bottling and labeling your own handmade products on an individual basis.

Happily married for 42 years, she and her husband have nine beautiful grandchildren who can’t wait to spend time with their grandparents. Strong in her faith, the Hamiltons attend the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, West Congregation.

So if you’re looking for a trusted place to buy supplements, oils, spices and other natural items, Great American Natural Products should be the first place on your list. This family owned and operate business has been in existence for more than 30 years and is still going strong.
