Police have opened a homicide investigation into the deaths of two young toddlers who suddenly died hours after their mother put them to bed.
Jordan Spencer,31, told authorities her toddlers, Olivia and Micha Gee, aged two and three, suffered from asthma. Her boyfriend Novell Jordan also claimed he found the toddlers struggling to breathe minutes before they were declared dead at the Montefiore Medical Center in New York City.
While police initially believed the children may have died from complications from their condition, an autopsy done on Olivia has led them to believe otherwise.
‘Two kids having asthma attacks at the same time and succumbing is virtually impossible,’ a police source told the New York Post.
‘It looks like this girl was punched in the stomach. It’s a homicide investigation.’
Marks were found on the children’s necks, although they may be from CPR which may have been administered or simply incidental, the Post reported.
Police have questioned Jordan, also 31, – who is a Blood Gang member – but are yet to press any charges.
The young mom, a nurse practitioner, is now under psychiatric care, the Post reports.
Jordan’s story about the series of events corroborates with Spencer’s.
Olivia and Mach were put to sleep in the same bed in the same bedroom of their Van Cortlandt Park South home at around 8:30pm by their mother and her boyfriend, both 31.
Around 1:15am, the boyfriend woke up and went in to check on the kids.
He noticed that their breathing was strained so he called 911. By the time paramedics arrived, both kids were unconscious.
The toddlers were rushed to Montefiore Medical Center in the Bronx where Olivia was pronounced dead at 2:10am. Her brother died three minutes later.
A coroner will be conducting an autopsy to determine the cause of death.
