Man arrested for ‘execution’ of couple shot dead in bed while newborn lay between them

A man has been arrested for the grisly murders of a New Orleans couple shot dead in bed while their newborn baby lay between them.

Dawn Ellen Scott, 28, and her boyfriend, Raynell Kimbrough, 31, were shot multiple times at their family home in Kenner on April 4.

The couple’s baby, just three or four weeks old, was lying in bed with them while Scott’s two-year-old toddler and a ten-year-old son were also in the house when they were killed.

Now police have arrested Shaun Barnett 28, on suspicion of the ruthless double homicide.

‘It takes a certain particular person that can walk in and execute somebody with an infant laying next to them,’ Kenner Police Chief Michael Glaser told WDSU.

Detectives tracked down Barnett after witnesses described hearing gunshots and then seeing a man, wearing a camouflage jacket, leaving the family’s apartment in the early hours of the morning on April 4. He drove off in a gold-colored Ford Taurus.

‘The key piece of evidence is he has the male victim’s blood on his jacket or shirt that an eyewitness can put him wearing that morning,’ Glaser said.

Barnett was arrested and charged with two counts of first-degree murder and being a felon in possession of a firearm.

He was in jail for an unrelated probation violation at the time of his arrest for the murders. He had got parole in June 2015 after a conviction of aggravated assault with a firearm, possession of an unidentified firearm and drug charges in 2012.

Kenner police insisted: ‘He’s a violent offender who should have never been released.’

The grisly murders were discovered shortly before 7am on April 4, in Idaho Avenue after the couple’s ten-year-old heard the shots and ran in to the bedroom.

She then knocked on a neighbor’s door who called the police.

All three children are now in the custody of their a maternal grandmother.

Mother-of-three Scott, who is listed as an overnight associate at Wal Mart on her Facebook page, is said to have been in a relationship with Kimbrough, a warehouse worker, for the past year.

Families of both victims are still in shock over the shooting.

‘She was a good girl. I can’t say anything else,’ her mother Ellen toldNola.com.

‘My brother was a loving person,’ Kimbrough’s sister Shaketha Kimbrough added to The Advocate.

‘He may have had his ups, and he may have had his downs, but he never would do nobody what they did him. And for them to literally put his girlfriend in the middle of this – a mother of three – I mean why?’

‘Whatever it may have been, it was cold-hearted. And the last person you have to answer to is God, and he’s going to handle it,’ Shaketha Kimbrough said. ‘Whoever you may be.’

‘I’m speechless. It’s still unbelievable. I’m trying to figure out what happened,’ said Natacha Kimbrough, sister of Raynell Kimbrough.
