When white Detroit driver Steve Utash began to be surrounded by a gang of black men after accidentally hitting 10-year-old black child David Harris, nurse Deborah Hughes, grabbed her gun and took action to protect the then unconscious Utash.
Hughes’ actions ultimately broke up the attack on Utash.
“I laid over the top of him, I put my arms around him and I said ‘You are save. Nobody’s going to hurt you no more’,” says Hughes.
Five men have since been arrested for attacking 54-year-old Utash, who remains in a coma and critical condition from injuries he sustained in the April 2nd beating.
Hughes has been praised by Detroit Police Chief James Craig for saving Utash’s life.
