POPS Student and Gibbs Senior Awarded $78,000 Scholarship

ST. PETERSBURG — Evony Scott, a student in the Professional Opportunities Program for Students, Inc. (POPS) and a senior at Gibbs High School is the recipient of a $78,000 scholarship to Florida Agricultural & Mechanical College (FAMU).

The scholarship was awarded on Sat., Feb. 21 during the Annual Spring Preview hosted by FAMU.

The preview is an open house designed to provide an opportunity for prospective students to learn about the university’s outstanding degree programs, meet the faculty, administrators and current students and tour the campus.

A highlight of the event is the awarding of scholarships to students. The awards are based on information presented during the registration, which included students’ grade point average, test scores and other criteria.

Scott has been a member of the POPS program for three years. The program includes Character & Leadership Development Seminars, guest speakers, community service and cultural enrichment activities, college tours, financial assistance with ACT/SAT registration fees and college application fees, and paid summer internships.

POPS, Inc. has participated in the Annual Spring Preview at FAMU for four years. This year POPS students from St. Petersburg, Tallahassee, Orlando, Bartow/Lake Wales and Pahokee/Wellington attended the event. A total of 12 POPS students, from various locations, were awarded scholarships last Saturday.

Local POPS students have been awarded scholarships in the past, however Scott’s award is the largest ever received by a St. Pete POPS student.

Congratulations Miss Evony Scott!
