St Louis boy, 8, who was shot dead as he ran to safety when gunfire rang out

An 8-year-old boy who was shot dead in St Louis on Monday is the 11th child to die from gun-related violence in the city since June.

Xavier Usanga was fatally shot at his home around 5pm in the 3500 block of North 11th Street in the Hyde Park neighborhood – only 15 hours before starting the second grade.

While announcing his death, The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported that the city’s  Police Chief John Hayden choked back tears while announcing Xavier’s death.

He said that when the 8-year-old was shot, he was standing next to an 18-year-old male who was also shot but survived.
