Alaska man shot dead girlfriend & their two toddlers before turning gun on himself

Police in Alaska say a couple and their two young children who were found shot dead at their home in Anchorage last week died as a result of a murder-suicide carried out by the mother’s boyfriend.

In a statement released Thursday, investigators said that evidence points to Curtis Young III, 24, shooting and killing his girlfriend, 27-year-old Desiree Gonzales, and their children, 4-year-old Zaiden Young and 17-month-old Zarielle Young, before turning the gun on himself.

‘While the investigation is still [ongoing], with lab results pending, the evidence supports the theory that this was a contained scene and that this was a murder/suicide,’ said Police spokeswoman Anita Shell in a statement.

Earlier, authorities had called the deaths an isolated domestic violence incident but stopped short of saying they suspected a murder-suicide.

A relative who went to check on the family at their apartment in Alaska’s largest city found the four dead from gunshot wounds May 13.

The children’s father usually dropped Zaiden and Zarielle off at their grandparents’ home in the mornings before the grandmother took them to the babysitter, Police Sgt. Mike Couturier said during a press conference last week.

When the children didn’t show up, the grandfather tried to call his daughter but got no answer.

The man went to the home in the 500 block of East 74th Avenue and found the doors locked. He went in through a window and found the family dead.

Neighbors later told police they heard multiple gunshots between 1.37am. and 4am last Wednesday, but no one called police.

During a press conference last week, Sgt Couturier described the crime scene inside Young and Gonzalez’s home as ‘very catastrophic,’ reported the local station KTVA.

Court records indicate that Young had a criminal history, including a conviction in connection to a 2010 domestic violence assault targeting his girlfriend, identified in official documents only as ‘D.G.’

According to court filings, the father of two kneed his girlfriend in the chest and struck her with an empty soda can. He pleaded no contest in that case.

In 2011, Young was arrested twice for putting Gonzalez in a chokehold until she blacked out.

Relatives told Alaska Dispatch News that Gonzalez, who drove a school bus for a living, and Curtis Young had been dating for about six years. They had moved into the apartment on East 74th Avenue in a working-class Anchorage neighborhood only a year ago.
