Anthony Mason fighting for his life after heart attack

Former NBA player Anthony Mason is said to be fighting for his life as he battles serious heart problems following a heart attack.

NBA writer Peter Vecsey reported on Mason’s condition Wednesday via Twitter:

Sickened to report, ex-Knick Anthony Mason fighting for life. Congestive heart failure, heart attack, four surgeries, last one 9 hours. Sons by side.

Congestive heart failure, fighting for his life, going through four surgeries; it doesn’t sound too good.

Mason, 48, was a one-time All-Star who played 13 seasons in the NBA. He was a fan favorite with the Knicks and Hornets, where he was known for carving unique designs and messages into his hair. His tough style on the glass and on the defensive end endeared him to the fans and helped him become the Sixth Man of the Year in 1995 and make the NBA’s All-Defensive Second Team in 1997.

The Knicks confirmed Mason’s status as well and sent their best wishes to him with a Tweet:

Our thoughts and prayers are with Anthony Mason and his family. #Knicks
