A married high school basketball coach accused of having sex with a 16-year-old student has killed himself following an eight-hour standoff with police.
Leo Mackie, 43, fatally shot himself inside a home in Oklahoma City on Tuesday night after police arrived at the property.
A judge had issued a warrant for the teacher’s arrest earlier in the day over allegations he had sex with a teenage girl on 10 occasions.
Father-of-three Mackie, who coached basketball at Putnam City North High School, was spotted outside the home by officers who were looking for a robbery suspect.
When police approached him, he ran to the back of the property and ‘barricaded himself in’, Captain Paco Balderrama, of the Oklahoma City Police Department, told KFOR.
Others who were inside the home – thought to be relatives of Mackie – left the house before a loud gunshot rang out.
The teacher was later found dead with a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Mackie was accused of having sex with the 16-year-old student 10 times between Halloween and New Year’s Eve last year, The Oklahoman reported.
The girl previously attended a different school to the one Mackie taught in, however she was enrolled in a program at his school that helps high school dropouts – making any relationship between the pair illegal.
She told police that they met in late October last year and had sex in a park after meeting at her home. She added that their relationship was consensual.
Capt Balderrama said: ‘[Mackie] was seen inside the house. He ran to the back of the house and a loud bang, similar to a gunshot, was heard.
‘In January we received a report in reference to an underage female who wasn’t an ex-student at Putnam City North but then transferred to a program at Francis Tuttle.
‘This individual who is our victim in the case gave us information that she had had a consensual sexual relationship with Mr Mackie that had gone through a period of about four months.
‘We did have enough information for an arrest warrant and we also applied for a search warrant so our tactical unit could go inside the house.
‘Yesterday evening at about 6.25pm is when the actual search warrant and arrest warrant were obtained. Tactical unit members made entry into the house using the tactical robot and the camera system.
‘We found Mr Mackie deceased from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. It was over just before 8pm last night.’
Counselors were at the school on Wednesday to help students cope on what a spokesman for the school district called ‘a somber day’.
Mackie’s Facebook page says he has been married since 1999 and his LinkedIn account says he has three children – a 21-year-old daughter and two sons, aged 15 and 12.
He had been teaching at Putnam City North High School for 10 months and previously worked for United Airlines.
