South Beach Tow’s “Bernice” becomes Florida’s first-ever female head football coach

A reality TV star has become the first female head football coach in Florida history after being appointed at a Miami high school.

Miami Jackson High announced that Lakatriona Brunson would start as the Generals’ new coach on Monday.

Brunson, 38, gained notoriety in recent years on the reality TV series ‘South Beach Tow’ where she starred as her alter-ego Bernice.

Reality TV star Lakatriona Brunson, who has been named as the head football coach at Miami Jackson High School

But since the show she has been working as a physical education teacher, and attended Miami Northwestern in the early 1990s, where she was a track and field athlete and a basketball standout, who went on to play for Tennessee State.

Joining her in her role at Miami Jackson is recording artist Luke Campbell, who will be the football team’s defensive co-ordinator.

The former 2 Live Crew front man has previously run defenses at Miami Central, Miami Northwestern and Miami Norland.

And speaking at a press conference yesterday, Brunson admitted it was a historic appointment, not only for Florida but for the school.

She told the Miami Herald: ‘When (former coach Earl Little) stepped down, I took a look at the job like “Why can’t I do it?”‘

‘We’re just here to change the atmosphere at Miami Jackson and get some W’s on the board. I know I can do it… Watch what we’re going to do. It’s some big things coming up.

‘We’re not here to talk about music or reality TV. We’re here to talk about football only.’

It is understood that Campbell, 55, was in contention to be the head coach at Miami Jackson, but was ruled ineligible as he is not a certified teacher.

However, Brunson was already a PE teacher at the school so was able to take the job.

During her time at Northwestern, she threw discus and shot put, that guided Florida to a record 12 state championships. Pictured is Brunson throwing the discus in 1995, aged 17

She has also played football for the Miami Fury during the mid-2000s and during her time at Northwestern, she threw discus and shot put, that guided Florida to a record 12 state championships.

Later, Brunson went on to star in South Beach Tow, a reality TV series produced by Jennifer Lopez, which shows dramatized re-enactments of the day-to-day business of Tremont Towing, a towing business in Miami Beach.

In the show, she played Bernice a driver and assistant manager at Tremont Towing.
