Miami men’s basketball freshman Dewan Huell, a highly-touted recruit expected to immediately bolster the Hurricanes’ roster in 2016-17, was arrested on charges of batteryTuesday.
According to a police report obtained by WINZ, Huell assaulted a man at his ex-girlfriend’s dorm room on the campus of Florida International University.
“I am aware of the reported incident involving Dewan Huell last night, and we are still gathering information,” Miami athletics director Blake James said in a statement. “I have very high expectations for all of our student-athletes, as I know Coach Larrañaga does for his team, and any misconduct will be addressed.”
Miami coach Jim Larrañaga told the Miami Herald on Wednesday, “I have not had a chance to meet with Dewan yet, but I plan to meet with him and find out what happened. Dewan is a terrific kid and we’ll deal with this once we get all the information.”
Huell, a 6-11 big man, was a five-star recruit (via Rivals and ESPN) and averaged 19.2 points and 9.1 rebounds last season at Miami Norland High School.
