ST. PETERSBURG – The Zeta Upsilon Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® in partnership with the Eta Rho Chapter of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity held a financial literacy workshop entitled “Money$ense” Sat., Feb. 20 at the Enoch Davis Center.
This coordinated effort, under the leadership of the chapter’s Family Strengthening and Education Committees, successfully provided financial awareness and educational tools to 130 youths, who met to discuss the importance of budgeting, credit debt and identity theft. In addition, more than 60 parents and community volunteers met to discuss sustainability efforts. The committees extend thanks to Junior Achievement and Fifth Third Bank for presenting interactive scenarios and budget role-play at student-friendly levels.
Under the core principles of “Service to All Mankind,” the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority’s Family Strengthening Committee targets the area of increasing financial literacy, eradicating childhood hunger and providing seasonal wraps for disadvantage families. The Education Committee seeks to increase academic performance by providing supplemental resources and progress monitoring and extracurricular activities for students, as well as increasing parental awareness of academic programs.
