On Monday July 15, 2019 at 3 p.m. in the City of Tampa Old City Hall Building, 305 E. Kennedy Blvd. in downtown Tampa , 3rd Floor, St. Petersburg’s Gibbs High School Graduate and Florida A&M University Alum Steve Scruggs will be recognized during a presentation titled “The Game That Changed America.” This is in recognition of the City of Tampa’s Archives Awareness Week (July 14-20, 2019). Historian Fred Hearns will recount Florida A&M’s 34-28 win over the University of Tampa November 29, 1969 in Tampa Stadium. It is recognized as the first college football game in the South played between an all-Black team (FAMU) and a predominantly White team (Tampa U.) Scruggs was voted the Most Outstanding Offensive Player in the game. He resides in his native St. Petersburg. A reception will follow the presentation. The public is invited.
