ST. PETERSBURG — When Carlos Daniels experienced another senseless killing of a youth four years ago, he knew in his heart there was something that he needed to do. There appeared to be a gap in the relationship between teens and the police in the community.
“How do we bridge that gap,” he asked himself. We need the police, we love our youth and we can’t afford another tragic death. Four years later, Daniels is still answering his question with the 4th Annual Teen Conference.
This conference themed, “The Power of the Right Choice,” will be held Sat., Aug. 30 at Wildwood Recreation Center, 1000 28th St. S. from 10 – 3 p.m. It is FREE to youth 11-17 years old and aims to be one of the bridges.
“As a community, we must empower our youth,” said Daniels, a 27-year-youth worker with the City of St. Petersburg and 15 years as a teen supervisor. “We must give our youth the tools to make right choices. Our youth can take this opportunity to recognize there is help in the community and people who are willing to help them obtain their goals.”
The conference is designed to promote positive youth leadership within our community and throughout life. The goal of “The Power of the Right Choice” is to focus on issues that teens face daily including drugs, alcohol abuse, guns, gangs, violence and imprisonment. The conference will feature a variety of speakers, presentations and entertainment.
Lunch will be provided. For more information and registration, contact Carlos Daniels @727-551-3270 or Carlos Childs @ 727-893-7733.
