AKA annual dance swings into the holiday season

BY ALLEN A. BUCHANAN, Staff Writer

ST. PETERSBURG – The Zeta Upsilon Chapter of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. held their annual Holiday Fundraiser Dance last Fri., Dec 18 at the downtown Hilton.

More than 400 people packed the ballroom and helped kick off a weekend of planned activities including a member’s only gala on Dec. 19 and 60th anniversary reception on Dec. 20.

The money raised will help fund their Youth Development Foundation, which funds scholarships for their AKA AKAdemy members (Exquisite Gems and Pathfinders). Monies raised will also go towards supporting community service organizations such as the Enoch Davis Center, the Childs Park YMCA, The Sanderlin Center, the Alzheimer’s Foundation and the National Cancer Society.

After dinning on sautéed shrimp, chicken, a variety of green vegetables and potatoes, the crowd took to dance floor, shaking a tail feather for a purpose—community service.
