Old-school jam revved up the Manhattan Casino

BY ALLEN A. BUCHANAN, Staff Writer

ST. PETERSBURG — The Old School Summer Party turned it up several notches at the Historic Manhattan Casino last Sunday evening as baby boomers streamed in and hit the dance floor.

If you want to relive those glory days of the Ohio Players, The Tavares Brothers, Heatwave, P. Funk, Teena Marie and Earth, Wind & Fire, bring your partner and dancing shoes to the Manhattan every Sunday evening through Sept. 6 (excluding Aug. 9) for a weekly dance contest.

“Larry Newsome came up with the idea,” said Cherrye Baker, the social media specialist for the Casino. “I sent a Facebook blast out this week and the community really responded.”

Everyone had their own memories tied to the ageless songs that were being played. Jeffrey Osborne, The Sensations, Stevie Wonder, Kool and the Gang and the list goes on and on.

The weekly summer dance is a dance competition where the winning couple wins $50, and on Sun., Sept. 5 all winning couples will return to compete for a $500 cash prize.

So if you want to “Get on the Good Foot” and get your “Boggie Down,” come on out to the Old School Summer Party on Sundays from 6-10 p.m. and have a great time dancing down memory lane.

“We want to continue the old-school jam after the competition to either once a month or at least once a quarter,” said Baker.
