20th African American Health Forum at Foundation for a Healthy St. Pete on April 18th

Keynote address by Dr. B. Lee Green of Moffitt’s Green Lab, free health screenings, panel discussions, and more

(St. Petersburg, Fla.) – The Minority Health Coalition of Pinellas is partnering with the Foundation for a Healthy St. Petersburg and others to improve community health with a full day of vital programming, free health screenings, and more. Join us for our community’s 20th African American Health Forum, happening on Saturday, April 18th, from 10 AM – 2 PM at the Foundation’s Center for Health Equity.

While our community health rankings have climbed in recent years, significant racial and geographic disparities remain across a variety of areas including heart disease, diabetes, liver cancer, and more. The African American Health Forum seeks to battle disparities and improve community health by offering educational panel discussions on chronic disease, maternal-fetal health, mental wellness, and more; screenings in the areas of blood pressure, glucose, glaucoma, skin cancer, cholesterol, and vision; and the opportunity to connect with local health care providers of color.

“We hope people gain an understanding of the routine screenings they need for the early detection of disease, build connections with local doctors, and more,” said Dr. Kenneth Bryant, who helped organize the first African American Health Forum more than 20 years ago.

Dr. B. Lee Green of the Moffitt Cancer Center’s Green Lab will deliver this year’s James Maxie Ponder M.D. Keynote Address. Dr. Green is a nationally respected researcher and thought leader in cancer health disparities. He currently serves as a Senior Member in the Department of Health Outcomes and Behavior at Moffitt Cancer Center, where he leads initiatives that address cancer disparities and improve participation among underserved populations in clinical and research studies. He also serves as a Senior Advisor to the Cancer Center Director.

“Creating opportunities for our community to come together to improve health is critical work, and we’re proud to be a part of it,” said Foundation President and CEO Dr. Kanika Tomalin. “We’re grateful for the healthcare providers and partners that make this day possible and look forward to all of the ways we’ll continue to improve our community’s health together in the years ahead.”
