A birthday party to remember

ST. PETERSBURG — Although many people celebrate the important milestone of living 50 years with a party, not many people can boast having more than 200 people show up and show their love except for, of course, Deborah Figgs-Sanders.

A room full of family and friends partied the night away at this elegant event held Feb. 6 at the St. Petersburg Beach Community Center back dropped by the Boca Ciega Bay.

“My gratitude for the people in my life would fill the Coliseum, and I thank God for everyone,” said Figgs-Sanders.

Emceed by School Board Member Rene Flowers, the guests took a trip through the five decades of Figgs-Sanders’ life with stories from the 60s until present day. The soulful sound of Deneen Wyman sang excerpts from Aretha Franklin, Bill Withers, Chaka Khan and Sade while models from each decade presented fashions of the times.

“I’ve never had a birthday party and never really allowed my family to celebrate it. I never wanted God to think that I’ve ever taken one minute of his blessed time for granted,” she said as she thanked her guest for sharing this moment.

Happy belated birthday from The Weekly Challenger, and may you celebrate 50 more.

  1. In all the year that you have published, there has never been captions with pictures that I can recall. It would be nice to identify individuals in the pictures.
I use to live in St. Petersburg and would to ID people I may know.
