A play with ‘Passion’

BY DEXTER MCCREE, Feature Writer

ST. PETERSBURG –“Passion: The Resurrection” is a local Broadway quality Easter production adapted from the New King James Version Bible about the death and resurrection of Jesus of Nazareth. This original screenplay, written and directed by Angelia Fletcher, is in its sixth year of production.

“This year’s “Passion” play is a must-see for several reasons,” said Fletcher, revealing that the last five productions dealt strictly with the crucifixion, but this year there are new scenes dealing with the resurrection.

“Before Pastor Claude (Williams) passed, we worked on adding the new vision that God had given to me,” she said.  “I would write and he would check to make sure I was biblically correct. Therefore, this year we are focusing on the resurrection.”

Passion, aeThe late Pastor Williams, founding pastor of Victory Christian Center in 1992, and his wife, the late First Lady Cecelia Williams, left great memories for the church and community. The 2018 production is dedicated in honor of their memory.

The Honorable Judge Patrice Moore, daughter of Pastor Williams, will reprise her unforgettable role as Mary Magdalene. In the New Testament, Mary Magdalene was a Jewish woman who traveled with Jesus as one of his followers. She is also said to have witnessed Jesus’ crucifixion and resurrection.

“The play is outstanding, creative and a real presentation of a traditional biblical theme that transition into modern day with rapping, dancing and singing, said Mozell Davis. “The ‘Passion’ brings new life to an old story just like ‘Jesus Christ Super Star’ when it debuted on Broadway.”

The play includes original scores by Henry “Hank” Ashwood as well as Christian rapper Rashard Harrell, who is performing the theme song.  Their performances elevate the “Passion” to the next level. Critics have dubbed it the “Hamilton” of Easter productions.

“Last year’s “Passion” play really took me back,” said Cherrita McBride. “It was really emotional. I was very involved when the Roman guards were beating Jesus. I wanted to jump in and help Jesus out.  I am looking so forward to this year‘s resurrection variation of the production. I can’t wait!”

Writer and director Fletcher wants to take the production to the big stage. She envisions this being the last year that the play will be held at Victory Christian Center. A larger venue is being sought out for the upcoming years to accommodate the attendance.

The play will be held at Victory Christian Center, 3012 18th Ave. S. Scheduled shows are Thursday, March 29 and Friday, March 30 at 7 p.m., a matinee performance is scheduled on Saturday, March 31 at 3 p.m. and on Easter Sunday at 10:30 a.m.
