CLEARWATER — Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. once said, “Life’s most persistent and urgent question is: ‘What are you doing for others?’” The Springtime Club answers that question by coming together on the King Holiday to assist the Springtime Elks Lodge in serving their neighbors and the community.

In recent years, President Obama passed federal legislation that supports Dr. King’s vision for civic duty and encourages Americans to give some of their time on this day as volunteers in citizen action groups.

The MLK Day of Service is a part of United We Serve, President Obama’s national call to community service initiative. It calls for Americans from all walks of life to serve on MLK Day and throughout the year by working together to provide solutions to the country’s most pressing national problems.

The Springtime Club adhered to this call to action in 2011, when it mobilized a group of women in the City of Clearwater to identify and attend a need in the community that was underserved or unaddressed by existing service organizations.

Today, the club’s crime prevention projects and cold case initiatives leads the charge in its community for victim’s rights through programs and services that supports crime victims and advocates justice for victim survivors.

Each year, The Springtime Club gathers at the Elks Lodge in Clearwater after the MLK march to commemorate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the accomplishments of the Civil Rights Movement.

The celebration and annual tradition was established by the brothers of the Springtime Elks Lodge and is one of the oldest Martin Luther King Day events that pays tribute to the historic union and coming together of the African-American community to fight for racial equality.

The Springtime Club honors Dr. King’s memory by working together with organizations like the Springtime Elks Lodge to help make a difference in the lives of others and the community. Through its partnerships, the club supports and reinforces Dr. King’s vision that collective action, whether at the voting booth, in the education system, or the workplace, can mobilize our community to continue his work.

MLK Day is a chance to start the year off right by making an impact in your community. You can begin by joining the Springtime Elks Lodge, Home of The Springtime Club, and hundreds of people who will gather for a day to fellowship and make Dr. King’s dream a reality.

The Springtime Elks Lodge Day of Service takes place Mon., Jan. 19 at 1011 Engman Street in Clearwater. Activities begin after the NAACP MLK March to Coachman Park and will include food and refreshments, music by Big-Dad-E-Sound, line dancing with The Springtime Club and vigorous rhythms from a quest appearance by Tapped In.

  1. I want to thank The Weekly Challenger Newspaper for sharing all of the wonderful events in the Tampa Bay Area in observation of the Dr. Martin Luther King Holiday. It was inspiring to see all of the great things that were happening locally to remember Dr. King’s legacy and President Obama’s initiative for a day of service that honors King’s memory.
