ST. PETERSBURG – The St. Petersburg College Center of Excellence (COE) is hosting a summer recruitment event to prepare students in grades 3-12 for higher education. On Saturday, June 18, families are welcomed to come out and learn about the program and enjoy free food from 11-3 p.m. at Lake Vista Park, 1401 62nd Ave. S., St. Petersburg.

The COE program focuses on providing underserved students with support to bridge gaps students may experience accessing a postsecondary education. Through career-readiness activities, SPC Retention Services Project Manager Nikishea Wright is working together with parents to plant the seed early in the minds of students that college is an attainable option that can help them build a brighter future.

“Through the center, students who are often overlooked are given the opportunity to sharpen their minds and expand their horizons by participating in scholarly activities,” Wright said. “They’re exposed to community service projects, academic excellence, leadership training and social development to prepare them to pursue a higher education.”

COE works with Pinellas County elementary, middle and high school students to help them succeed in school and have healthy self-esteem. Through monthly local gatherings, students and their parents gain support through academic excellence, social and emotional development, and service-based leadership, including the following types of activities:

  • College preparatory workshops and college tours
  • Career exploration
  • Leadership building activities
  • Community service projects
  • Educational, social and cultural field trips
