GULFPORT – The City of Gulfport will join Americans across the U.S. on January 17, 2015, by stepping up as community service volunteers during our Inaugural Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. “Day of Service.”
In partnership with Gulfport Neighbors, the “Day of Service” will leverage the strength of our community through a variety of service-oriented projects, clearly accepting Dr. King’s challenge to advance social justice and economic opportunities for all people.
If you have a group of friends, family, co-workers interested in participating in a community service project during Gulfport’s Day of Service, now is the time to register your team and project at mygulfport.us/mlkservice/. If you do not have a community service project in mind, please go to the web site and review a suggested list of local organizations you can choose to contact. Teams signing up will be featured in future editions of the Gabber.
Gulfport’s Day of Service is scheduled from 8:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., beginning at Tomlinson Lake Park (5492 Tangerine Ave. S., Gulfport). Mayor Sam Henderson will host the day’s activities at the opening ceremony at 8:30 a.m. Councilmember Yolanda Roman will share some of Dr. King’s inspirations regarding volunteerism.
Volunteer teams will then head out to lend a hand in a variety of community service projects. Upon completion, we will regroup at Tomlinson Lake Park for a closing ceremony and volunteer appreciation picnic. The Royal Blues Band has offered to volunteer their time for entertainment from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m.
