PCDBC endorses Rick Kriseman for re-election in mayoral race

ST. PETERSBURG — The Pinellas County Democratic Black Caucasus (PCDBC) announced last Wednesday its endorsement of Rick Kriseman for re-election as the mayor of the City of St. Petersburg.

PCDBC President Trevor Mallory said their decision was based on “how we see our future and the future of our youth, the needs of our elderly, the homeless and access to affordable health care, attention to environmental issues, and the long-term partnerships with ancillary organizations that are required to ensure that south St. Petersburg is just as prosperous as any other corner of our city.”

Standing on 22nd Street South, Mallory mentioned the many black-owned businesses and homes that used to line the corridor. He said the caucus has heard loud and clear that the community longs for the hustle and bustle to return.

“From Job Corps, to the Dr. Carter G. Woodson African American Museum, Advantage Village Academy, the hair care store, Lorraine’s Restaurant, St. Petersburg College and several other businesses in between, we have only just begun to tip the iceberg of potential,” he said, noting that the PCDBC “will be a part of the dialogue necessary to help shape economic development and spur entrepreneurship along the corridor.”

Second Vice President Matthias Byrd took to the podium to share additional reasons why Kriseman is deserving of another four years.

“In addition to sustainable economic development in the black community, we feel it is equally as important with the divisive rhetoric coming from the White House daily to have a mayor that shares the core fundamental belief in the basic human rights of all his constituents.”

Byrd said he proudly stands with Kriseman because he supported President Obama’s attempt to eliminate privatization for federal prisons; for banning the box on city employment applications, for preserving the environment and for surrounding himself with a diverse staff of strong African-American men and women.

“I am truly humbled and elated to have the endorsement of the Pinellas County Democratic Black Caucus,” said Mayor Kriseman. “It is through genuine partnerships and hard work that will allow for every sector of our community to grow and thrive together.”

Voter registration deadline is Oct. 10, deadline to request a ballot to be mailed is Nov. 1 and early voting begins Oct. 28 through Nov. 5.
