ST. PETERSBURG — The Pinellas Chapter of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) will be partnering with Childs Park YMCA Sat., Aug. 22 from 9-11 a.m. for their annual back-to-school backpack event. The event, coordinating by Executive Director Deborah D. Figgs-Sanders, is located at 691 43rd St. S, St Pete.
The SCLC with host a voter’s registration drive vendor table for non-registered voters in our community. August 6 was the 50th anniversary of the Voting Rights Act, which was a result of the Civil Rights Movement, led by the founder of the SCLC, the late Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Event will include a backpack giveaway with school supplies, free school uniforms, a host of vendors and of course, voter’s registration drive.
SCLC President Toriano Parker and Executive Director Jeff Copeland is encouraging everyone to come out and support this great event because African Americans are failing to exercise their rights as citizens and vote.
