St. Petersburg Public Works team wins three major awards
The City of St. Petersburg has recently been recognized for engineering excellence and outstanding leadership in its Public Works Administration.
Mayor Ken Welch and all city team members are celebrating the Engineering & Capital Improvements Department for its 2023 state and national recognition from the Design-Build Institute of America (DBIA). The organization named the city’s Lift Station 87 Wet Weather Flow Transfer Project a winner of a National Award of Merit in the Water/Wastewater category.
The new lift station and associated pipeline, located in the Child’s Park neighborhood, will help balance the wet weather flow between the Northwest Water Reclamation Facility and the Southwest Water Reclamation Facility and improve the reliability of wastewater service for St. Petersburg residents.
The Lift Station 87 Wet Weather Flow Transfer project was honored by ENR (Engineering News-Record) for innovation, design quality and robust implementation. ENR Southeast named it one of the best in the region, giving it an Award of Merit in the Water/Environment category.
Our Stormwater, Pavement, and Traffic Operations Department is another shining example of excellence under the leadership of Director Marshall Hampton. He was honored with the Progressive Leadership award by the Florida Water and Pollution Control Operations Association (FWPCOA) during its Regional Awards celebration over the weekend, given to the leader of the year in the association’s region.
Recognized as an empathetic and supportive leader, Hampton is wrapping up his second year with the City of St. Petersburg. He is credited with reestablishing the citywide bridge and seawall program, reinstating the city’s American Institute of Architects (AIA) templates for design-build project delivery, and demonstrating excellence in project management for the Municipal Marina Redevelopment Study.
These regional and national honors serve as a testament to the Public Works Administration’s hard work and dedication to enhance the quality of life for all residents and keep the City of St. Pete running smoothly.
