3rd Black Art Gala on Feb. 23 supports Green Book of Tampa Bay

The Straz Center for the Performing Arts, in partnership with Symphonic Distribution, the Gobioff Foundation, and Armature Works is holding the Third Annual Black Art Gala in celebration of Black History Month.

This year’s event takes place on Sunday, February 23, 2025, at 7:00 PM at the Straz Center, honoring artists and activists whose contributions have shaped the cultural landscape both locally and beyond.

Green Book of Tampa Bay (GBTB) partners with the Black Art Gala to amplify the voices and talents of Black artists in the community.

GBTB co-founder Dr. Hillary Van Dyke shared, “Along with our online directory of Black-owned businesses and organizations, we are very involved in the arts space in Tampa Bay. Being a part of the Black Art Gala has helped Green Book of Tampa Bay to expand our programs and initiatives, particularly as it relates to amplifying the visibility of the Black community’s rich contributions to the arts, business, and culture in Tampa Bay.”

She noted that the 501(c)(3) nonprofit GBTB assists by promoting the event through its network of like-minded community members and businesses “who share a passion for supporting or enjoying the arts.”

Founded in 2021, the Black Art Gala was established to celebrate and preserve the artistic achievements and advancements of African American artists in Central Florida. It has since become a premier event dedicated to recognizing the vibrant contributions of these creatives and fostering a deeper appreciation for their work.

This year’s gala promises an unforgettable evening featuring:

  • Emcee Shandra “Babs” Littleton from WiLD 94.1
  • Live performances by celebrated artists and musicians from Tampa Bay
  • Visual art showcases highlighting exceptional talent

Part of the proceeds benefit Green Book of Tampa Bay Inc. “The more people who attend, the more we benefit,” said Van Dyke. As a nonprofit, Green Book runs almost exclusively on grant money, community donations, and events like these.

The Black Art Gala is a celebration of culture, creativity, and resilience. By honoring African American artists and activists, the gala shines a spotlight on their invaluable contributions, while creating a platform for education, appreciation, and connection.
