Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority donates meals to fight childhood hunger

ST. PETERSBURG — The Zeta Upsilon Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. in collaboration with The Youth Development Foundation of Pinellas County, Inc., recently joined community liaisons from Duke Energy to coordinate a meal packaging program in preparation of Alpha Kappa’s Alpha’s National Childhood Awareness Hunger Day on Oct. 16.

The service project was sponsored by a grant received from Duke Energy and is part of the sorority’s national program initiative to address the increasing number of households that do not have financial resources to adequately clothe their family, provide food and shelter.

A host of community volunteers mobilized to package more than 350 take home meals to benefit elementary age students from one of the five schools in south St. Petersburg with high enrollment in the Pinellas County Schools Pack and Sack program (Campbell Park Elementary, Fairmount Park Elementary, Lakewood Elementary, Maximo Elementary and Melrose Elementary).

The AKA AKAdemy students also provided support for this effort by donating items to help support this effort. Their contribution taught them the importance of giving back, helping to create a hunger free learning environment and by reducing domestic childhood hunger.

Special acknowledgment goes out to the Eta Rho Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity. Those men worked tirelessly alongside the Pathfinders, demonstrating the key principles of manhood.

Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. is an international service organization comprised of more than 283,000 members in 988 graduate and undergraduate chapters abroad.
