Meeting our Physical Needs

BY REV. DORAL PULLEY

“But my God shall supply all your needs according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.” – Philippians 4:19

Although we all are unique individuals, we all have the same basic needs. Abraham Maslow, a renowned psychologist, developed a Hierarchy of Human Needs. At the base of his pyramid are physical needs, then safety needs, followed by love and belonging, then self-esteem needs and at the very top of the pyramid is self-actualization, the fulfillment of destiny and purpose.

Before any other needs can be met our physical needs for air, water, food, clothing, shelter, rest, movement must be met first. The scriptures declare that things are first natural then spiritual (I Corinthians 15:46). Jesus ministered to people’s natural as well as spiritual needs.

In the text, multitudes were following Jesus and they had been listening to his teaching all day and they were hungry. Instead of ignoring their human needs, Jesus used a boy’s lunch of two fish and five loaves of bread to manifest enough food to feed over five thousand people. Not only did he feed the multitudes, but the manifestation was so great that there were leftovers to the tune of twelve baskets. God is concerned about us as a whole – body, soul and spirit. Therefore, God will manifest whatever we need and give us abundance and overflow.
