A Pledge to Action: Increased Parental & Community Engagement

During the past two years, this column has been advocating for increasing parental engagement by parents, schools and the community as evidenced by:

  • Talking with parents in a “Focus Group” settings

  • Defining “school contacts” as contacting the school at least 3 times a week during the school year when the child is not in trouble

  • Challenging parents and community by asking the question: What is your relationship with your child’s school and the teacher?

  • Hosting nine community summits on education through President of the Parent Support For Education Council, Inc., (PSFEC).

It is the intention then to challenge all who have a committed compassionate interest in the education and success of children take a pledge for to “stand for immediate action.”

The Pledge to “Action”

As a parent, grandparent or caring adult, I hereby give my pledge of commitment to help our community’s children achieve a truly independent future by actively encouraging increasing parental engagement 100 percent in the struggling schools in my community (South St. Petersburg). My declaration of responsibility and commitment to my public schools is stated in these five self-evident truths as spoken by President Woodrow Wilson, the 28th President of the United States, from 1913 to 1921.

  1. “As Americans, we are the owners of the public school system.”

  2. “As owners, we bear a responsibility to participate in the system.”

  3. “Accountability for our public schools, their safety, and its employees and its funding rests with us and the rest of the system’s owners.”

  4. “Our children’s future depends on the improvement of the public schools.”

  5. “And this improvement depends on our participation.

Therefore as a parent, grandparent, foster parent or caring adult, I take personal responsibility for my child’s safety and education, and the safety and education of the children in this community. Today, I pledge to volunteer my time and resources to working with the PSFEC, community and my public schools each semester.
