Still time for early voting in the 8/20 Primaries; Power of the Vote Initiative for Pinellas Black Voters

August 20 Primary is right around the corner, with early voting through Sunday, August 18. There are partisan and nonpartisan seats up for election. Partisan seats include a Florida United States Senator, Florida Congressional seats 13 (Dem) & 14 (Rep), and a state senator for District 21 (Rep). County offices include commissioners, school board members, and sheriffs. There are also state attorneys and judgeships in some districts.

The Supervisor of Elections is a universal primary contest with the same candidates on both tickets, (both are Republican at this time). Other partisan seats are county commissioners and precinct committee persons, and some of them appear only on certain precincts. Sounding the alarm on lower Black Pinellas voter registration numbers.

New voter registration laws have seen a large increase in the number of voters with “INACTIVE” registration status. It’s vital to check your voter registration if you have not voted in the last two years.

The active voter registration numbers for Black residents in Pinellas is also indicating a deep drop in active voter numbers since the 2020 election.

The Power of the Vote Collective is a nonpartisan, non-endorsing get-out-the-vote campaign, collectively powered by community organizations toward the goal of maximizing Black voter participation in Pinellas County, Florida, for the 2024 general election.

With a goal to close the racial voter turnout gap in Pinellas County, Power of the Vote partners include the St. Petersburg Branch NAACP, Pinellas County Urban League, African American Heritage Association, Foundation for a Healthy St. Petersburg, the Woodson African American Museum of Florida, Equity Institute (formerly 2020 Plan/One Community), Mt. Zion Progressive, and the Interdenominational Ministerial Alliance.

The campaign will include

  • Trainings on What 501c3s Can & Cannot Do During this Election Cycle
  • The Family Vote Captain Project to recruit 1,000 captains committed to ensuring that everyone in their family has a vote plan
  • GOTV Ambassadors Program for younger and emerging leaders, offering training and live leadership and volunteer activities to heighten participation in the election
  • Reclaim Your Vote outreach to inactive voters, encouraging them to update their registrations, and to those not registered to encourage them to register
  • Speakers Bureau of key leaders who do in-person speaking engagements and media appearances (TV, radio, podcast, etc.) to raise awareness about the imperative of political participation
