5000 Role Models Program needs men

ST. PETERSBURG — Lakewood Elementary School is seeking hardworking, positive men from the community to act as mentors for the fourth and fifth grade boys enrolled in the 5,000 Role Models Program.

No doubt about it, this program is powerful!  Participants in the program for the 2015-16 school year made significant improvements in their academic achievement, school attendance and appropriate school behavior. All of the boys who had the opportunity to participate showed positive results, and they are looking forward to the 2016-17 program.

Men, if you can give one hour a day, a minimum of two days per month, your time as a mentor can be a tremendous benefit to the program and the boys who are involved.   One-on-one mentoring is important because it allows each boy who participates to have a specific person to spend time with on a regularly scheduled day.

Mentors follow guidelines set by the program, but have a choice of activities they and the boys can choose to do. Having a man to talk with, ask questions and do things together on a specific day is very important to the boys.  However, one-on-one mentoring is not the only role for volunteers. The program also offers a variety of group activities to help our boys grow into positive, effective men.

Those individuals who want to get involved but do not yet know how much time they can spare or how often they can be available may still participate.   Speakers, workshop presenters, entertainers, business owners and men from all occupations are needed.

In addition to the one-on-one mentoring, weekly group sessions are scheduled to discuss or review current topics of interest. Individually and in groups, short lessons and activities are provided to produce proficiency in grooming, etiquette, public speaking, matters of integrity or other areas, as the need becomes apparent.

Go to the sign-up meeting and find out how you can help on Tuesday, Aug. 16 in the Lakewood Elementary Media Center, located at 4151 Sixth St. S.

To sign up for participation in the program as a mentor or speaker, please call Mr. Ferrell at 727-272-5130; or email him at Ferrell@pcsb.org.
