Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging Specialist wanted at Eckerd College

Position Summary

Assists in the development and implementation of diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging (DEIB) efforts through the framework of Inclusive Excellence in support of student access, retention and success. Develops and implements effective programs and initiatives for students designed to enhance DEIB. Ensures that activities and programs align to support the College’s values and goals related to Inclusive Excellence and DEIB.

Partners with campus departments and units to expand existing programs that will improve the culture of diversity on campus.

Under the supervision of the Executive Director of Inclusive Excellence, the Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging Specialist is responsible for establishing, implementing and assessing programs and services in support of its mission.

Essential Functions (other non-essential duties may be assigned)

  1. Work collaboratively with faculty, staff and students to promote environments of belonging within the Eckerd community.
  2. Create opportunities to engage students in diversity and inclusion programming.
  3. Assist with DEIB related training for faculty, staff and students to ensure that members of the community have the knowledge, tools, resources and support they need to be conscious thought partners in the creation of an equitable college culture.
  4. Develop and oversee a train-the-trainer program to support and sustain DEIB efforts in the offices of Admission and Student Life.
  5. Provide guidance and leadership to Eckerd College Organization of Students, RAs, and Peer Mentors to implement engaging and informative student-organized programs and activities around DEIB.
  6. Foster opportunities for campus dialogue about current events related to racial, ethnic, gender and sexual orientation diversity.
  7. Partner with the Office of Service-Learning to develop cultural literacy training for students, staff, and faculty involved in service-learning.
  8. Assist in the selection and delivery of College Program Series events related to DEIB issues.
  9. Assist multicultural and student organizations and other campus groups representing DEIB in honoring heritage months and culturally significant events.
  10. Collaborate with the Office of Admission, the Office of Service-Learning, the Center for Spiritual Life, the Office of Accessibility, Residence Life, Campus Activities and Athletics to provide support for students in marginalized communities.
  11. Assess the current needs of marginalized student populations to include Black, LatinX and LGBTQ+-identified students on campus.
  12. Research best practices in Inclusive Excellence/DEIB efforts in higher education nationwide.
  13. Apply assessment and research results to inform recommendations for programmatic and institutional change.

Required Qualifications

  • Knowledge of DEIB issues, laws, and trends in higher education.
  • Demonstrated commitment to the principles of Inclusive Excellence as a DEIB framework.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with students, faculty and staff of diverse lived experiences, and backgrounds.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with internal and external constituents (including students, faculty, staff, and alumni).
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively mentor and guide student leaders.
  • Professional and progressive work experience in higher education preferred.
  • Ability to handle difficult and stressful conversations and situations with professionalism and composure.
  • Ability to handle confidential information with discretion.


Physical Requirements/Working Conditions

  • Frequently required to communicate with others in person or via email, video conferencing, chat applications, and/or telephone.
  • Occasional after-hours work required (nights, weekends).


Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree required in the field of education, social sciences, psychology, cultural/ethnic studies or other related field.
  • Master’s degree preferred in education, social sciences, counseling, student development or other related field.
  • 2 years experience in student development services in a college or university setting.
