Silence is Stillness

BY REV. DORAL PULLEY

“Be still and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth.” – Psalm 46:10

Silence is more than not speaking. Silence is holistic. Silence is quieting our bodies – every muscle, every organ and every cell. Silence is quieting our souls – our minds, our emotions, our intellect and our will. Silence is getting in touch with our spirits so that the Holy Spirit has free reign our lives.

Good things begin in the silence. When we are silent, something good truly begins. When we are still the good desires of our hearts come into expression. We can have a new beginning in the stillness and the silence anytime and anywhere.  Through the stillness and the silence, we learn to be more and to do less. We learn to yield more to the Spirit and we are less likely to force things. In this consciousness of stillness and silence, we do less making things happen and more letting things happen organically.

It is only when we are truly silent and still that we “know that He is God.”  It is in knowing that “He is God” that we are able to be completely loving to everyone regardless of who they are and what they have done. It is in knowing that “He is God” that we are able to be full of joy even when sorrow is all around us. It is in knowing that “He is God” that we are able to be totally at peace when confusion is rampant. It is in knowing that “He is God” that our doubts are settled, and our fears are relieved. When we reach this state of being, no matter what is going on in our lives, as stated in today’s reading, we are able to “stand still and see the salvation of the Lord.”

Rev. Doral Pulley is the senior pastor of Unity Temple of Truth Church, 511 Prescott St. S, St. Petersburg.
