ST. PETERSBURG — As the finer women of Zeta Gamma Zeta Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated — operating within the principles of scholarship, service, sisterly love and finer womanhood – the sorority strives to seek the greater good within the community.

They accomplish these goals by providing services to their neighbors at risk due to adverse circumstances often beyond their control. Focusing on women and their families, unhoused community members, those suffering from addictions and survivors of domestic abuse are national and local initiatives.

Projects this year have focused on providing personal hygiene items to three high schools, two middle schools and one elementary school. Hygiene bags were also donated to the Salvation Army (both males and females), Community Action Stops Abuse (C.A.S.A.) and C.O.S.A./Operation P.A.R.

The ladies are committed to assisting their “little” sisters manage the transition from high school to college and university life.

Throughout scholars’ academic careers, many have overcome the challenges of pre-dawn bus rides, hard-to-identify lunches and doing everything possible to defy mandated dress codes. Unfortunately, in the ensuing years, some fell by the wayside. Yet, despite these perils, many charted courses for success and crossed the finish line with excellence.

The Zetas seek to reward and support those who have stayed the course by awarding scholarships to graduates continuing their education and with Project Dorm Box, an initiative that aims to help defray some college housing costs for parents and students.

Dorm Boxes consist of many necessary items needed to start college in a dorm or apartment. Items for the boxes include bedspreads, sheets, towels, bed throws, dish clothes, dish towels, plates, cups, bowls and eating utensils. Additional items include hangers, dish and clothing detergent, fabric softener and school supplies. All these items and more are packed in a 40-quart wheeled bin that can later be used for storage.
