ST. PETERSBURG —The kids at the Midtown Celebrity Club are busy these days trying to preserve a very important part of their history and raise enough funds for the upcoming Juneteenth Freedom Festival Sat., June 14, from 11-5 p.m. at Campbell Park in St. Petersburg.
Besides Independence Day in July, Juneteenth, which is the oldest known celebration commemorating the ending of slavery in the United States, is the only other day that is celebrated nationally that relates to our freedom and independence.
So why are there so few fireworks or festivities surrounding Juneteenth? It is just as important to celebrate Juneteenth as it has always been to celebrate Independence Day. Juneteenth is a vital historical event in the history of our great nation.
The purpose of the event continues to be the promotion of unity, diversity, educational, social, and economic improvement. So please help us ensure that this historical event is made a reality on June 14.
Between school, family events and community performances, the Club has not yet raised enough money to make Juneteenth a real happening. Please consider being a sponsor or an individual contributor. You can also contribute an item or items to our silent auction also to be held June 14 or their yard sale this Sat., June 7 from 9-5 p.m. at 1350 22nd St. S., St. Pete.
