Grocery co-op empowers local communities with fresh produce pop-ups and Drumming Up program

ST. PETERSBURG — One Community Grocery Co-op, a pioneering initiative dedicated to fostering sustainable and equitable food systems, is proud to announce its ongoing efforts to empower local communities through fresh produce pop-ups and a vibrant drumming program.

Driven by a commitment to addressing food insecurity and promoting community engagement, One Community Grocery Co-op seeks to redefine the grocery shopping experience by prioritizing accessibility, security, sovereignty, economic empowerment and community development.

Currently, the co-op organizes regular pop-up events at local markets.

Our vision is to build a self-determined, community-owned, cooperative grocery store that meets the community’s needs for fresh, healthy, nutritionally dense foods and supports the physical, mental and economic health of south St. Petersburg. With this vision in mind, we are on the path to providing fresh, locally sourced produce to underserved neighborhoods.

Currently, the co-op organizes regular pop-up events at local markets. These pop-ups serve as vibrant hubs where community members can access affordable, nutritious fruits and vegetables while supporting local farmers. One Community Grocery Co-op aims to promote health and wellness while fostering community connections by bringing fresh produce directly to neighborhoods.

Equally as crucial to its commitment to fresh food access, One Community Grocery Co-op recognizes the importance of cultural enrichment and creative expression in community development. That’s why the co-op is proud to offer a dynamic drumming program, allowing community members to unite, express themselves and celebrate their cultural heritage through rhythm and music.

Led by master drummer Malick Faye, the drumming program cultivates musical skills and promotes collaboration, resilience, and a sense of belonging among participants. It takes place monthly at different community locations. The next co-op meeting, presentation on Drum Up Grant, will take place on Thursday, April 29, 6-7:30 p.m. at the Enoch Davis Center, 1111 18th Ave S, St. Pete.

We believe that everyone deserves access to fresh, healthy food, regardless of their zip code or income level. Through our produce pop-ups and drumming program, we are not only nourishing bodies but also nurturing communities, fostering resilience, and celebrating diversity.
