BY REV. DR. DORAL R. PULLEY Spiritual Leader
ST. PETERSBURG — At Unity of Midtown, we are into books. A few months ago, Pastoral Liaison Sister Lynnette Hardy, went around the church gathering hymnbooks and putting them in all of the pews. I mentioned it to another minister and he remarked, “Aren’t hymn books archaic?” I replied, “No, we are a church that is into books.”
Recently, the church purchased new pew Bibles and someone asked, “What do you need them for?” My response was “because we are a Christian church that’s into books and the Bible is our primary text.”
Our church, Unity of Midtown, began in 1957 by African-American women such as Mamie Hughes, Rev. Catherine Brooks, Jessie White and Vivian Lockhart to make the Truth teachings as taught and demonstrated by Jesus, the Christ, available people of color especially to those on the south side of St. Petersburg.
Today, we are a growing multi-cultural church who loves and welcomes all people who desire to be their best selves and live their best lives by practicing the principles of holistic health, prosperity and harmony in all relationships.
Unity of Midtown is so into books that our church attracts published authors as members of our congregation. Sister Gina Folk, director of our Leadership Academy, has a new book that is coming out at the end the month entitled “People Leadership: 30 Strategies to ensure your team’s success.” In celebration of this accomplishment, we are having a book signing Sun., April 26 directly after church.
We are so into books that this month Unity of Midtown began a new ministry called the Book Club under the leadership of Sister Sherry O’Dell. At the beginning of each month, we select a book for us to read as a congregation. The book is made available in our Unity Bookstore. At the end of the month, we have a fellowship and discuss the book.
This month’s book is “The Four Agreements” by Don Miguel Ruiz which has been on the New York Times Bestseller List for over seven years. Our Book Club meeting will be Wed., April 29 at 6:30 p.m., and refreshments will be served.
