WMNF community radio’s 7th Annual Juneteenth Celebration
TAMPA BAY — In keeping with the worldwide celebration of Juneteenth, WMNF will enhance its regular broadcast to provide a full day of African American-based programming. African-American hosts will join with or fill in for the regular hosts on Fri., June 19 from 6 a.m. until Sat., June 20 6 a.m.
Produced by the combined efforts of organizers Scott Elliott, Pamela Robinson, the WMNF Diversity & Volunteer Committees, WMNF staff and countless WMNF volunteers, listeners, supporters and local talent, this year’s activities will continue to provide a real sense of community.
WMNF listeners are invited to tune in to the inventive, eclectic and informative music and public affairs programming from some of Tampa Bay’s best-broadcast talent.
The community is also welcome to come down to our open house/potluck meal at the station, and encouraged to participate in the Juneteenth potluck by bringing a dish to share, from 6-11 p.m. All are welcome to join in the festivities that evening, which will include meeting and breaking bread with others.
This year’s film scheduled to be screened is “20 Feet from Stardom,” a 2013 American documentary film directed by Morgan Neville and was produced by Gil Friesen, a music industry executive whose curiosity to know more about the lives of background singers inspired the making of the film.
The film follows the behind-the-scenes of backup singers and stars Darlene Love, Judith Hill, Merry Clayton, Lisa Fischer, Táta Vega, and Jo Lawry, among many others. Last March it won the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature at the 86th Academy Awards.
This wonderful film fulfills our theme of acknowledgement long time coming. The scheduled screen time in of this film is Fri., June 19 at WMNF’s Live Music Studio, located 1210 E. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. in Tampa. The film starts at 7 p.m. and is 90 minutes in length.
Also in the Live Music Studio, the crew of WMNF’s Poetry Is is planning a poetry slam at 9 p.m. This is sure to be an amazing time!
This 7th Annual WMNF Juneteenth Celebration focuses on the station’s goal of empowering and enriching the community as a whole. Keep in mind that this event is inclusive and open to all persuasions of our community.
